Mit den Worten “Legende” und “Ikone” wird heutzutage leider schon fast inflationär umgegangen, um die Bedeutsamkeit von Personen, Designs oder sonstigem Output zu beschreiben. Auf die Persönlichkeiten, die der Fotograf Chi Modu in seiner langen Karriere bereits abgelichtet hat, treffen diese Superlativen allerdings mit voller Berechtigung zu. Der in Nigeria geborene und in New Jersey aufgewachsenen Chi Modu hat lange Jahre bei dem US HipHop Magazin The Source als Fotograf gearbeitet und hat so bereits früh Rapper wie Tupac Shakur, Nas, Eazy E und unzählige andere vor der Kamera gehabt, meist bevor diese ihren Durchbruch hatten und bekannt wurden.
Und so sind viele Fotografien entstanden, die zumindest jeder, der ansatzweise mit HipHop und Popkultur zu tun hat kennt.

Hier kann man nun wirklich von Ikonen sprechen, die Chi Modu mit seiner Arbeit auch visuell unsterblich gemacht hat. Mit seiner Ausstellungsreihe “UNCATEGORIZED” bringt er nun diese und viele bisher noch nicht veröffentlichte Werke aus seinem riesigen Archiv zu den Leuten und hat aktuell Stop in Berlin gemacht. Hier hat er sich darüberhinaus mit dem Designer und DJ Inan Batman zusammengetan, um eine kleine Capsule Kollektion herauszubringen, bei denen die T-Shirts und Hoodies einige seiner besten Fotos zieren.

Die Ausstellung ist absolut sehenswert, findet in der HVW8 Gallerie statt und geht noch bis zum 4. August 2018.
